After much thought, I'm going to give you the secret of keeping Macintosh OS 8.5 to 9.2 working.
It's really quite simple:
Most problems regarding the Mac Classic OS can be attributed to corrupted preferences. These files are located in the System Folder, in a folder named Preferences. The files to trash are:
  • Finder Preferences
  • Mac OS Preferences
  • System Preferences
Place these 3 files in the trash, restart your computer and fix the Appearance CP and go ahead and do your stuff. Once you have restarted, empty the trash. Now that I've saved you the $35.00 your regular repair guy would have charged you, take the money, put it in an envelope and mail it to me! ;-)
This advice works with Mac OS 8.5, 8.6 & 9.0 - I am not responsible for any damage or problems this may cause - use at own risk!
This technique will also work with a number of other system functions such as networking and printing. Please remember to keep track of any information you may have input into these controls - things like passwords and access numbers are destroyed when you trash the preferences. If you do use this method, make a hard copy of the settings FIRST! You can send me an e-mail detailing your eternal thanks by clicking here.
